Mortality

After a long and fulfilling life, Tofino the hermit crab has passed away.

We have watched him grow in the wonderful habitat the kids created for him, moving from shell to shell as he outgrew them. The Cycling Giants alternated weekly as Official Nurturer, refilling his water sponges and food stuffs.

We are very sad to see him go, but we all understand that death is a part of life for all creatures. The children created a fitting farewell ceremony - hints of Catholicism, Paganism, and Spiritualism - and built a beautiful mausoleum from a wooden box.

ICING ON THE CAKE / ICE SCENE ON THE SKATE

Hi! Henry here, bringing you some exciting glimpses from Friday. My first time skating in over a decade! Daniel Lee, Hanna, Dessa and Theo were all very patient as I got my sea (frozen sea?) legs back, and showed off their moves.

OK, well these girls DEFINITELY know what they are doing!

The boys were ready to show off their skills too.

OK, now they were just teasing me. Their fancy slides were not as painful as my flops!

The available chairs made for a nice alternative, like driving a little tractor.

OUTTA MY WAY!!!

Speeding past the camera...

...but still time for a moment of philosophical reflection.

The Pouncing Pumas were there too in full force, we watched Daniel, Salvador and Charlie make some moves with their hockey sticks in the adjacent rink.

What a lot of fun for a temporate West Coast boy! I hope the kids are up for some more skating, I am betting those delicious mini-pizzas will tempt them back again...

Thanks for a fun afternoon!

January Recap

The cold isn't stopping us from continuing to play outside and explore our city! Here are some photos from last month.

We were also able to go check out the "Come Up To My Room" installation at The Gladstone Hotel. Check out Dewson Afterschool's blog entry on that day here.

Henry's note: the highlight at the Gladstone was definitely the glowing orbs in the Ballroom, synched to glow with the beat of the music. The kids liked hanging out in there most of all! I didn't have my camera but I managed to snap this pic on my phone.
