Refurbishing furniture

On Wednesday we spent another day working on our furniture. This is the second project we've done with found or discarded wood pieces, following our wood, nails, and bottlecap tambourines. Having already spent a day sanding and priming the table and chairs, alongside special guests the Wandering Hamsters, we were ready to paint.

Leah prepped the table by dividing it into squares so that each Cycling Giant or special guest Wandering Hamster would have their own space to paint. We learned about warm versus cool colours and chose to work with one or the other. Lines were eventually crossed and we all painted together all over the place. Great collaborative art-making guys!

All the table needs now is a quick coat of (adult-applied) varnish and it's ready to come back to life.

We Care About Our Neighborhood (And The Earth)

We decided that on Fridays we would care for our neighborhood by the simple act of picking up litter: Nora, Isa, Dessa and Hanna will pick up litter along Argyle, Finn and Theo will take care of streets around our Lobb studio and Trinity Bellwoods.

Another beautiful Friday

In this game, each player takes the twine around a tree or two, and together the group creates a complicated net of laser beams! The goal is to pass through the net without touching any part of it nor getting separated from your partner!

Dominoes, The Arctic, Public Transportation and Dougie the Sign Painter

We went all over town last Thursday! We checked out this sculpture that looks like a giant game of Dominoes at Bloor Parkette (southeast corner of Bloor Street and Spadina Avenue), and entered Jewish Community Center to see beautiful photographs of the Arctic by Canadian photographer, Mark Loren Freedman. Then, we walked along Bloor all the way to Honest Ed's and met April's friend, Dougie, who paints signs and designs window displays at Honest Ed's!

On the way home, some of us had our first "rush hour" experience on the subway and the bus. So much fun!!

Dougie also made album art for April's band Hooded Fang!

Woodwork Wednesday

We made these percussion instruments with the Twirly Birds yesterday out of cedar wood they brought from a lumber yard in the neighborhood. We worked together to sand down the edges and nail bottle caps in to make jangle and jingle sounds.

Thanksgiving Celebration

Beth, a teacher of the Pouncing Pumas, wrote a great blog post about last Friday's Thanksgiving celebration.

Here are a couple more photos!

Beautiful Photographs and Ugly Oil Spill

Edward the Photographer
We were lucky enough to go see Edward Burtynsky's photographs of the Gulf Oil Spill last Thursday. Everybody was exceptionally well-behaved. We all signed and left a note in the guest book, on what we thought about the photographs and about the oil spill.

ps. There's a great article about this series of photographs in the current issue of Canadian Art magazine.

TTC Poem
Angel's friend Claire came along because she wanted to check out the exhibit as well. We learned that Claire is a student of Creative Writing and is a poet! So, we got her to help us together write a poem while riding the Queen street car, from Dufferin to Spadina.

on the streetcar

streetcars are grey white and red
they are brown and red inside with pictures on the side
and the seats are silver with red cushions

we see a lot of buildings out the window

and the trees you see are yellow gold and red
when we drive through the fall leaves, you see different colour trees

the seats are red and fuzzy

a firetruck out the window
people are reading the newspaper on the streetcar
i can smell tim hortans and pizza pizza too

She taught us that in poems you can include not only what you see, but also what you smell, what you hear, what you touch and even what you taste! We all agreed that "Spadina" is a nice-sounding word,  too bad it didn't make it into our poem.
Thanks, Claire!

Artsy Wednesdays
We started working on our secret project – The Musical: Name TBD ; we tried out hands at set design, starting with the backdrop. Look!

Sneak Preview

This sweet space suit is not only going to become awesome custom in the next couple of month, it also helps the teachers bike home not too wet on days like today!

Making goodies

Today, we made some Piggy Bricks – oh, sorry, I meant we made some Cycling Bricks –  to trade for cornbread on Friday's Thanksgiving celebration with the Pouncing Pumas. They turned out great and not too sweet. Dessa is not a fan of the sunflower-seed butter in it, Nora had to be careful with them or else her tooth would become even more wiggly and Angel thinks they are just too sticky for even non-wiggling teeth.

After melting 3 Tbs of butter, 1/2 cup of sunflower seeds, and 3 cups of marshmallows,
we poured the mixture into 1/2 cup of Skittles and 3 cups of cheerios.
As the mixture cools, it becomes tougher and tougher to mix!

Don't get distracted by the Skittles, Hanna!

Thanks for the pan, Anna!

Then, we chased after the cycling brick for a bit.

Eventually, it made its way to the fridge.

While we waited for the goodies to cool, we had a serious brainstorm session. Only the person holding the baby trumpet could speak. This is what we came up with:

We would like to learn:
1) why farts and poo are stinky; 2) how to make a pillow.

We would like to teach:
1) proper gymnastics; 2) how to invent a story and make a comic book to tell the story.

Well, we also came up with ideas for the secret projects, but those I can't share yet!

Galleries are like stores, but not really

Last Thursday, we visited Gallery 129 and MLK127 on the corner of Ossington and Argyle. Out of the three shows we saw in the two galleries, we were most inspired by Laurie De Camillis' oil paintings of winter, snow, mountains, and trees. So, we came back to the studio and made drawings of winter, snow, mountains, and trees!

Letters, love, and surprises

Last week, we learned about the life of a letter - first a letter gets made (drawn, written, crafted...), then it puts on some clothes (an envelope), then comes the traveling, often via various different modes of transportation depending where the letter is born, and finally, it brings (most of the time) joy and surprises – on top of important information – after being undressed at its travel destination. Each of us drew/wrote a letter or two to somebody we really love; some of us wanted to deliver the letters ourselves, some of us wanted help from the mailmen/mailwomen. We said good-byes to our letters last Thursday. Some people are in for a big surprise this week!
